One of the few reliable things on the island of
Fuerteventura is actually the bus service. You can be pretty certain
that if the timetable says that your bus leaves at 11am then that is
exactly when it will leave, so don't assume that the usual maņana
attitude is relevant here!!
The buses are called autobuses in Spanish, but
here in Fuerteventura the locals call them 'guaguas' (pronounced
wawas). When looking for the bus station you need to look for the
sign that says 'estacion de guaguas' and there is a main bus station
in both Puerto del Rosario and Corralejo, whilst in the smaller towns
and villages there is only a bus stop.
All of the buses on the island are the new
coach-style vehicles, and are airconditioned with on-board music;
which would make for a very comfortable ride except for the rather
over-excitable driving styles of some of the drivers!
'Tiadhe' is the company that provides the islands
bus service, with 16 routes operating around the island. The most
frequent links are from the capital Puerto del Rosario to Corralejo
in the north (route number 6), and down to the airport and the resort
of Caleta de Fuste further south (route number 3). Service number 5
from Morro Jable to Costa Calma in the south of the island is also
fairly regular, but for all other routes check the departure and
return times very carefully before you set off on your travels.
Some of these other routes have only one service daily, primarily to
transport children and workers into Puerto del Rosario and bring them
home agin at the end of the day. They generally leave the villages at
around 6.30am and return from Puerto del Rosario at around 4pm, so if
you are planning on using these routes to spend a day out in the
countryside.....don't bother!
If you are going to use the buses on a regular
basis you can purchase a 'Tarjeta Dinero' or 'Bono' as it is more
locally known. This will cost you 12 Euros and will save you roughly
20% on the cost of each journey. The bus drivers will not accept
large denomination notes so make sure that you have some smaller
coins/notes before you leave. It is not necessary, however, to have
the exact change ready.
The buses here are only allowed to pick up and
drop off passengers from a designated bus stop; the drivers are
liable for a large fine and confiscation of their driving license for
2 years if caught breaking the law. The law also states that drivers
must not permit passengers to travel if there are no more available
seats; you cannot travel standing as you can in the UK.
One final, and very important, point.......you
MUST press the bell before your stop. Even if you are stood in
front of the door, the driver will not stop unless he has heard the
bell!!
