After Morro Jable, Costa Calma is the second main tourist resort of the Jandia Peninsula. Between 1960 and 1970, the land was sold for the building of private houses, and it wasn’t until 1977 that the first hotel was built by a German company.

The town developed very slowly as there was very little in the way of infrastructure, and communications were bad. Nonetheless, those old private houses now find themselves completely enveloped by good tourist hotels and leisure complexes.

The majority of the investment in this area has continued to be predominantly by German companies, which has meant that most of the holiday visitors, and indeed the residential community, are of German origin. German is spoken in most of the bars and restaurants, with Spanish as the second language, finally followed by English.

Around 1995, building activity in the area really intensified, with many new holiday complexes appearing, and Costa Calma became a real tourist resort. Here you will find that most of the bars and restaurants are actually contained within these hotels and shopping centres.

The town is one of the greenest in Fuerteventura, with a huge variety of trees, from Palms to Firs, making it extremely pretty. Its lovely big sandy beach brings visitors in search of sun and all kinds of water sports.
