El Cotillo, Fuerteventura

This pretty fishing village has not yet been taken over by tourism like Corralejo has. There are only a few small hotels at present, although plans are in place to develop the village with 5 star hotels and a golf course on the outskirts.

El Cotillo street sceneAt the moment you can really see how Corralejo used to be, with small whitewashed fishermen's houses. There are two harbours, the old one no longer in use but still a fabulous site for a meal in the overlooking restaurants, and the new one where you can see the myriad of fishing boats that set sail in the early hours of each morning.

The catches of fresh fish supply the charming restaurants that are on the sea front, with some of the best fresh fish that you will ever taste.

El Cotillo is on the west coast of the island, which means that the sunsets here are absolutely spectacular. It is well worth booking a table at one of the harbour-side restaurants so that you can watch the sun go down while you eat - wonderful!

You have two choices for beach locations here. To the south of the village is the wide sweeping curve of beach that is popular with surfers. The winds here ensure that there are great waves throughout most of the year.

To the north of the village are the beautiful coves and lagoons. These small, shallow beaches are great for families, with white sand and turquoise water; they are among some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
