Isla de Lobos Fuerteventura

Lobos is the small island that can be seen just off of the coast of Corralejo, between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. The island is thought to be only 2 million years old, which makes it quite a youngster compared to Fuerteventura at roughly 20 million years old!

Island de Los Lobos aerial viewThe Normans who arrived at the beginning of the 15th century gave the island its name after the large number of monk seals (lobos del mar or sea wolves as they were then called) that lived there.

Unfortunately, their meat made up the basic diet of the soldiers, who also used their fat as oil for lanterns. Those animals that were not exterminated fled for safer parts and the colony was lost.

Until 1968, the only inhabitants of the island were the lighthouse keeper and his family, a state of isolation that allowed its conservation up till now.

Small boats make the round trip to the island every day, so that visitors can enjoy the walk around the central volcano, and sunbathing and swimming in the sheltered coves.

Information on trips to the island can be found on our trips to Los Lobos page.
