Morro Jable, Fuerteventura

Despite retaining some of its old flavour as a fishing village, Morro Jable is now the biggest urban centre on the Jandia Peninsula. The last few years has seen a huge rise in the number of hotels and holiday apartments that have been built to meet the growing demands of the tourist industry.

The town has a modern port that allows for the unloading of provisions and passengers coming from Gran Canaria and Tenerife by ferry or jetfoil. The charming white houses go right down to the beach where there are bars and pretty outdoor restaurants; a perfect setting for a quiet spot of lunch or dinner of fresh fish that has been caught locally.

It is well worth setting your alarm early one morning to go down to the old harbour, to watch the local fishermen set out to sea in their colourful fishing boats. If you can visit in July, these same local inhabitants celebrate the day of the Virgen Del Carmen, the Patron Saint of the sea, on the 16th.

The fiesta involves the traditional procession of boats through the sea just off the coast, with the 'Virgin' being carried through the streets and then being lifted onto a decorated boat to join the procession. The afternoon passes with much music and dancing, and the true feeling of traditional Fuerteventura is very apparent.

The word ‘Jable’ means an accumulation of sea sand transported by the wind, and it’s these extensive sands that have made Morro Jable an international tourist destination of the first order, as well as the scene of international windsurfing championships.
